Bringing Holiday Cheer Virtually To Your Employees

With more businesses than ever operating remotely, staying connected to your employees during the holidays poses a unique challenge. Just because you can’t celebrate in person, it doesn’t mean you have to skip the festivities altogether. Here are a few ways to enjoy the holiday season as an office, even if you are apart.
  • Celebrate together virtually. Many businesses like to close out the year with a holiday party, where everyone can unwind and bond together over the past year's successes. Even though gathering in large crowds isn’t possible this year, the sky is the limit over video conference. Come up with games for staff to participate in and utilize built-in tools like polls and breakout rooms for people to chat. You’ll be surprised at how much fun it can be!
  • Recognize your employees. This past year has been challenging personally and professionally for many. Taking the time to reflect on 2020 and recognize people’s successes can be very meaningful to your employees. Write each employee a personalized note to let them know how grateful you are to have them on the team, or if you want to do something publicly, you can create internal awards to handout. The recognition can go a long way in employee satisfaction.
  • Organize a gift exchange. While you can’t wrap and swap gifts in the office, you can still host a virtual gift exchange. Online shopping is more popular than ever and coordinating for the gifts to be delivered to employee’s homes is safe and convenient. Depending on your employees' comfort levels, you can also encourage swapping e-gift cards that can be delivered to people’s inboxes. There are many alternatives, you just need to choose the option that is right for your business.
  • Share your favorite recipes. Food brings people together. Although you may not be able to host your annual holiday potluck, you can still share great recipes together virtually. Create an email chain for people to share their favorite holiday recipes and share photos from years' past. You can even compile all the submissions into a company cookbook for all to have for years to come
  • Help those in need. Volunteering in person may not be feasible, but there are plenty of ways that you can bring the office together for a good cause. Select a charitable cause and create a donation pool with your employees. Monetary donations are typically the preferred method of many charities during the holiday season, including food banks. Sorting through physical donations is much more time consuming than ordering the gifts or supplies that they need.
With a little thoughtfulness and effort, you can bring everyone together for the holidays. No matter what you choose to do, there are still ways to end 2020 on a happy note. For more holiday tips, head to BBB.org.
